In Melmed’s (The Rainbabies) counting book, one Pilgrim boy “sit[s] in a tree,/ dreaming of the tall, strong ship/ on which he crossed the sea”; on the opposite page, two girls “dressed in deerskin,/ gathering nuts below,/ [giggle] as they tiptoe by,/ too shy to say hello.” Although a passing reference to Squanto suggests collaboration, the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag remain segregated until the final scene. Buehner (It’s a Spoon, Not a Shovel) captures the beauty of autumnal skies and oceanside landscapes, but the uninitiated may be confused about how these two groups came to share the Thanksgiving table. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Through a simple, rhyming text of 12 short poems, young readers will experience 10 Wampanoag and 10 Pilgrim friends getting ready for the first harvest feast in the New World. Similar in scope and theme, and a great complement to B. G. Hennessy’s One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims (Viking, 2001; o.p.), this title adds the enjoyment of hidden pictures on each page. There is a turkey to find in each colorful spread and lots of small creatures to count. The feast scene has at least 10 critters, maybe more, frolicking, even making off with food. Lots of smiles and counting practice result in a super read-aloud.Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA

Patterned as a parody of the celebrated Clement Moore poem, this story of eight baby turkeys unfolds with joyous abandon and crackling vitality, as eight children embark on a Thanksgiving field trip that will change their lives forever. They are breathless as they catch sight of Farmer Mack Nuggett for the first time: “He was dressed all in denim, / From his head to his toe, / With a pinch of polyester / And a dash of Velcro.” The exuberant turkeys–Ollie, Stanley, Larry, Moe, Wally, Beaver and Groucho–catch the children up in raucous barnyard antics until the merriment is quelled by the sight of the ax. Deeply touched by the turkeys’ plight, the children–who have grown mysteriously fatter and have feathers sticking out from under their clothes–board the bus to go back to the city. The next night, family silhouettes can be seen–each with a grateful turkey guest–as “They feasted on veggies / With jelly and toast.” This humorous, lighthearted story is adorned with bold, bright illustrations that convey a sense of wacky high-spiritedness sometimes lacking in traditional holiday fare. Ages 4-7.

From School Library Journal

Pilkey has adapted Clement Moore’s classic poem for another holiday. The day before Thanksgiving finds eight boys and girls of various races taking a field trip to a turkey farm. Although Farmer Mack Nuggett seems kind at first, the children eventually discover his horrible plan to kill the turkeys for Thanksgiving dinners. Smuggling the turkeys home with them, the children save the birds, who join eight families for vegetarian dinners. The weakest part of this slapstick offering is the verse, in part because the story isn’t at all parallel to Moore’s and in part because of the stretches in rhyme to accommodate a pre-existing pattern. Some of the word play will escape children. Similarly, visual humor such as the placement of Farmer Nuggett and the teacher in an “American Gothic” pose will remain unappreciated by those too young for Grant Wood. The cartoon illustrations reinforce the story’s general silliness but are unremarkable in themselves. Those seeking Thanksgiving humor will better served by Marc Brown’s Arthur’s Thanksgiving (Little, 1983), while those looking for a human-turkey relationship should dust off Lorna Balian’s Sometimes It’s Turkey, Sometimes It’s Feathers (Abingdon, 1986). –Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN

Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah), is also called the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE.

When is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, and may occur from late November to late December on the Gregorian calendar.

How to observe Hanukkah?

The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a special candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukiah, one light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. An extra light called a shamash (Hebrew: “guard” or “servant”) is also lit each night for the purpose of lighting the others, and is given a distinct location, usually above or below the rest.

With the infectious enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning, Mario Batali–who presides over a culinary empire that includes the popular Food Network television show Molto Mario, four acclaimed New York restaurants, and a wine store–presents four complete menus for the holidays and captures all the fun and festivity that epitomize Italian celebrations. True to the commitment to simple cooking evident in his first book, Simple Italian Food, the dishes here deliver maximum flavor and enjoyment without being overly complicated.

Batali’s version of the famous Italian seafood extravaganza traditionally served on Christmas Eve–known as the Feast of Seven Fishes–includes no fewer than 15 enticing dishes. Marinated Fresh Anchovies are both surprisingly delectable and delightful in their simplicity. Salt Cod with Capers and Mint, Grilled Lobster with Herbs and Arugula, and Sea Bass Ravioli with Marjoram and Potatoes would each be showstoppers as the centerpiece of any meal. Served together, they comprise a truly unforgettable feast.

The Christmas Day menu is equally lavish, centering on a succulent boned turkey breast stuffed with chestnuts and prunes, while the New Year’s Day spread is pure decadence. The latter begins innocently enough, with a refreshing aperitivo of tangerine juice, Compari, and soda, then proceeds through a parade of richly flavored dishes, from the hot-pepper-spiked Octopus in the Style of the Prostitutes of Napoli, to the meatball-filled “mythic pasta dome” known as Timpano di Maccheroni, to the prosciutto-wrapped Braised Pork Roll. An irresistible selection of dolci (sweets), including Cinnamon Chocolate Pudding with Pine Nuts and Waffle Cookies, rounds out the meal. New Year’s Day welcomes a relaxed daylong open house replete with an ever-changing spread of antipasti, pasta, and dolci, most of which can be prepared at leisure and served at room temperature, enabling the hosts to enjoy the party as much as the guests.

Photos, along with helpful wine suggestions and practical advice on technique, accompany each menu. Throughout, Batali paints a portrait of his Italian-American family that reminds readers that the simple joy of being together is what the holidays are really about. The 60 simple yet elegant recipes can be mixed, matched, and adapted for any occasion. Served together or separately, each is cause for celebration. –Robin Donovan

From Publishers Weekly

Americans tend to think of Italian cooking as easy: we have come to rely on 15-minute pastas and hearty, seasonal dishes like minestrone. But here, Batali of Food Network’s Molto Mario presents the most cherished Italian dishesAthose served, often after days of preparation and with fanfare, during the holidays. Batali focuses on the seafood-rich Amalfi coast, beginning with a Christmas Eve menu that includes Vongole Origanate (clams oreganato), Baccal? Vesuviana, Ravioli alla Spigola (Sea Bass Ravioli with Marjoram and Potatoes), and in case you still have any room for dessert, Classic Cannoli. The book consists of traditional Italian menus that take you through the four holidaysAChristmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s DayAbut the recipes can be used for an impressive meal or snack any time. (There is also a separate section on the wines of Campania.) Cooking from scratch is the name of the game, so don’t expect shortcuts; however, instructions are generally to the point and the results are well worthwhile. Recipes like Mythic Pasta Dome (a sort of pasta torte) capture the elaborate and festive nature of holiday Italian cooking. Beginners might be intimidated: Baba (lemon cake) requires a yeast rising and the insertion of fine holes in the cake into which a lemon mixture is “infused.” But once practiced, recipes become easy, and there are some simple yet gratifying recipes, such as No-Bake Chocolate Cookies. If you want to enliven your Italian repertoire with authentic, celebratory dishes, this book is invaluable. Photographs by Quentin Bacon. (Oct.)
Every year, people all over the world celebrate Jesus birthday on December 25th. There are many different ways to celebrate. But, they are all festive and joyful.

Hanging Stockings

In a lot of countries, children hang Christmas stockings. By Christmas, each stocking will be filled with little gifts or stocking staffers.

Decorating Christmas Trees

It is tradition to put up a Christmas tree in December for Christmas. Some families put up Christmas trees as early as November. People, especially children, love to put Christmas ornaments on the Christmas trees and Christmas Angels on top of the trees.

Christmas Gifts

Perhaps, the part that children most look forward to at Christmas time is the receiving Christmas gift part. Young children, especially, receive tons of Christmas gifts and toys. Christmas presents are put underneath each Christmas tree. On Christmas Day, children get to wake up in the morning and open their presents.

For more Christmas traditions, there are lots of books that you can read. Below are some suggestions.

The story of Mayflower 1620 and the Mayflower 1620 crew is as follows. In September 1620, a little ship called the Mayflower set sail. The Mayflower passengers are one hundred and two men, women and children. The passengers of the Mayflower ship journeyed together, packed in the small Mayflower ship for a long time. Their voyage aboard the Mayflower ship was trying.

How long did the voyage on the Mayflower ship last?

The Mayflower ship sailed for 65 days. The Mayflower 1620 crew were hungry, sick, and seasick.

When did the Mayflower ship reach Cape Cod?

The Mayflower ship reached Cape Cod, their destination, on November 21.

After the Mayflower 1620 reached Cape Cod

After the Mayflower 1620 and the Mayflower 1620 crew reached Cape Cod, the pilgrims explored Cape Cod for several weeks. The pilgrims then sailed across Massachusetts Bay to Plymouth. There, the Mayflower 1620 crew and passengers finally found a safe harbor ans springs of fresh water.

What happened to the Mayflower passengers?

The passengers of the Mayflower ship started to build houses in Plymouth so they would have shelter for the winter that was rapidly approaching.

Who lived in Plymouth at the time the pilgrims arrived?

No one was living in Plymouth at that time. The people who used to live there was the Wampanoag. However, a sweep of sickness almost wiped out the entire population of the Wampanoag and those who survived the illness moved away.

The story of the pilgrims from the Mayflower 1620 ship

When Winter came, the pilgrims had little food to eat. They were hungry and cold throughout the winter. Many of the pilgrims got sick and died. Only about half of them survived. After the Winter has passed, visitors from the Wampanoag tribe visited the pilgrims and taught them to farm, grow crops and trade. This story of the Mayflower 1620 and the Mayflower 1620 crew form the origin of Thanksgiving as we know it today.

The First Thanksgiving dated to September 1620 when a group of pilgrims sailed from Plymouth, England, to search for new home. These men, women, children wanted freedom to worship whatever they wanted, a freedom which they were denied in England. The pilgrims crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a small ship called the Mayflower.

After a long and perilous journey, the pilgrims arrived at Plymouth, Massachusetts. They started to build their new homes. Life was difficult at the time and the pilgrims did not have much resources. They lacked food and warm clothes so many of them did not survive the winter ’s cold.

Spring time

When Spring arrived, the pilgrims were grateful. The native Indians taught them to grow crops and hunt for food. The pilgrims were hard workers and their crops grew so much in the growing season that soon they had plenty to eat. The fall harvest yielded more food than they could ever imagined. They were grateful and wanted to thank God for all the food for the coming Winter.

The first thanksgiving ever

The first thanksgiving was the pilgrims’ feast to thank God for all the crops and food. The native American indians were invited. This great feast was the Pilgrims’ first thanksgiving which was in the fall of 1621. The first thanksgiving feast and celebration lasted three days.

What day is thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Day is now an American national holiday. Thanksgiving Day is the day where families get together and have a good time. On Thanksgiving Day, people give thanks to the good things in their lives as others had done in the past. Today, Thanksgiving Day is best known for the Turkey Feast. Grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends gather to eat roast turkey dinner, the Thanksgiving Day Dinner.

For religious families, prayers are said before the feast on Thanksgiving Day. However, nowadays, it is common for people to use Thanksgiving Day as a day where families gather together, eat a big turkey roast meal and have a good time. There are many Thanksgiving day recipes and deserts. Many people look forward to Thanksgiving Day all year round.

Thanksgiving day food

The food for Thanksgiving Day is turkey, roast turkey to be precise. The turkey cooked on Thanksgiving day comes with stuffing and potatoes, yams and squash, cranberries and pumpkin pie. Some Thanksgiving day recipes add sweet potatoes, beans, cornbread and many other ingredients. In Europe, mince pie or mincemeat pie are common instead of pumpkin pie. Families eat together and chat and catch up on any news. Some may exchange Thanksgiving cards, flowers, plants or other gifts. Thanksgiving Day is also a day of giving as well as thanking.

President George Washington

In 1789 George Washington, the first president of the United States, made Thanksgiving a day for all Americans. On Thanksgiving day, people everywhere gave thanks for winning their freedom from England in the American Revolution. However, Thanksgiving did not occur every year for Americans. Thanksgiving did not become an annual holiday until 1863.

President Abraham Lincoln

President Abraham Lincoln was the U.S. president who made Thanksgiving a national holiday. Thanksgiving day was called by President Abraham Lincoln and on November 26, 1863, he announced that the last Thursday in November would be Thanksgiving Day. By then, America was divided by the Civil War. The North and the South fought each other over slavery. President Abraham Lincoln then made the last Thursday of November Thanksgiving day, a national holiday. President Abraham Lincoln had hoped that by declaring a national holiday, the spirit of unity will be brought about.

In 1941, Thanksgiving became a celebrated national holiday on the fourth Thursday of November.

“An excellent resource for research into the history of holidays . . . in the United States . . . Highly Recommended.” — The Book Report

Product Description

Halloween has evolved from the Celtic celebrations of 2,000 years ago to become today the fastest-growing holiday in the country. This, the only book to completely cover All Hallow’s Eve, from its beginnings to the present, examines the ancient origins as well as its traditions and celebrations, from costuming to bobbing for apples. Jack-o-lanterns, black cats, and witches are explained. Ghosts, ghouls, and goblins lurk behind every page.

The book traces the contributions of America’s immigrants to the holiday, documenting the beliefs each ethnic group has added to the mix. Related recipes, poems, songs, and photos perfectly complement the meticulously documented text. The result is the most educational and entertaining examination of Halloween, its myths, and its truths.

Below is a list of the federal holidays in the United States in 2009. Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees.

Thursday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 19 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 16* Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 25 Memorial Day
Friday, July 3** Independence Day
Monday, September 7 Labor Day
Monday, October 12 Columbus Day
Wednesday, November 11 Veterans Day
Thursday, November 26 Thanksgiving Day
Friday, December 25 Christmas Day

Is Washington’s Birthday a national holiday?

* This holiday is designated as “Washington’s Birthday” in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.

Independence Day

** July 4, 2009 (the legal public holiday for Independence Day), falls on a Saturday. For most Federal employees, Friday, July 3, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).)

What happens if a federal holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday?

Most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule and are already having weekends off. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday usually is observed on:

Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or

Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).

I work for an employer that requires us to work holidays. He pays us a holiday rate of time and a half. Does this holiday pay exempt him from counting that holiday in the normal workweek? Our employer says that since he pays us extra to work the holidays then that holiday is not included in the normal workweek. Is this legal?

So if you could kindly give me a list or something that tells when a certain holiday or ‘break’ starts and when it ends, it would be deeply appreciated. I am not currently in the US.

Thanks.
